11/12/08 - Sunday's Groundbreaking

This past Sunday was a joyous day for some very dedicated neighbors and gardeners in historic Apalachicola. What started out as just a cool idea at one of our Community Pride Meetings is coming into fruition. Our Apalachicola Community Garden has officially sprouted!

Our community garden is located on our preserved city squares on Ave F and 8th St. near our beautiful cemetery. This wonderful project began as a simple idea--one way to get the freshest vegetables for our local Food Pantry and all our citizens was to start right here!

With the OK of the City Commission we are off and running. We will be busy this winter fullfilling our garden plans and all should be ready for spring planting February 1. For a very small fee, citizens in Apalachicola will be able to rent correct organic raised beds complete with water supply. Most of our beds will be 4 feet by 24 feet--indeed, ample space for growing just about anything. And throughout the coming year, we will be hosting educational workshops on organic gardening and, of course, sharing food!

If you are interested in taking part in the garden, please let me know, and I can add your name to a plot. And if you are interested in volunteering, we would love to have you. Happy Gardening!
